The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

  • Supporting DSTDP laboratory analyses, involving sample size and power calculations, data management and summary statistics, exploring correlation, computing reproducibility rates and performing related hypothesis testing, comparing different RPR/TPPA tests, pairwise comparisons (parametric/nonparametric), and percent agreement and chance-adjusted agreement measures.
  • Supporting analyses using complex surveys, such as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG)
  • Specific activities related to the above projects could include:
  • Learn how to develop research questions.
  • Learn how to identify, review, and analyze complex datasets to answer research questions.
  • Learn how to develop materials to explain public health programs to the general public and to specific groups.
  • Learn how to strategically plan for and identify areas of emerging research that will be of relevance and importance to the mission and activities of the Division of STD Prevention, as well as public health at large.
  • Learn about the differences and similarities of both public health and medicine and identify areas of synergy between the two fields
