CDC Office and Location:  A research opportunity is currently available with the HIV Prevention Capacity Development Branch (HPCDB) in the Division of HIV Prevention (DHP), within the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. Successful applicants must relocate to Atlanta. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: This opportunity seeks a Fellow to collaborate on manuscript and product development centering on capacity building development activities conducted to advance the HIV prevention workforce's skills and knowledge. The fellow will train with CDC staff and contractors to understand available data, craft research questions of interest to the field, compile data to answer the research questions, draft manuscripts and other products, coordinate branch and agency clearance processes, and assist with the peer-review processes for publication. The Fellow will train with Data Analysts and other CDC staff to ensure the data informing the research analyses are relevant. Topics of interest include what capacity development activities are most requested and trends over time in requests, evaluation of capacity building activities, and assessing what capacity development activities are anticipated to achieve the goals of the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US Initiative as well as National HIV/AIDS Strategy goals and objectives.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following research activities:

1. Draft research questions that advance the field of HIV prevention, care and treatment from a capacity development lens
2. Collect data relevant to answer the research questions posed
3. Analyze the data collected to answer the research questions posed
4. Present the data in manner that is easily understood to the field of HIV prevention, care and treatment 
5. Draft manuscripts that convey the research question and findings that address the research questions posed
6. Complete human subject and clearance processes for the manuscripts resulting from the research process
7. Identify peer-review journals likely to publish the cleared research manuscripts
8. Submit research manuscripts sequentially to peer-review journals
9. Complete peer-review processes until a peer-review journal accepts the manuscript for publication

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 22, 2024.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for six months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing a master's or doctoral (preferred) degree to be received before January 5, 2024. Most recent degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
