CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Laboratory Reference and Research Branch, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Research Project: This project focuses on bacteria (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) culture and identification, and maintaining the N. gonorrhoeae collection in LRRB. The participant will coordinate with state public health laboratories members in the transfer and archive N. gonorrhoeae isolates at CDC.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will have a chance to partake in the following activities:

  • Use laboratory inventory management system (LIMS) software/program
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae culture and identification using the MALDI-TOF (Matrix assisted laser-desorption ionization time-of-flight)
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Attending meetings with collaborators (within in CDC and/or external partners)

Learning ObjectivesThe learning objectives include knowing how to use LIMS, culture and identify N. gonorrheoae, and perform AST on gonococcal isolates.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by September 15, 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:
  • Experience working in the laboratory
  • Experience in operating or maintaining scientific equipment or performing scientific techniques
  • Experience in using Microsoft office suite
  • Good communications skills
