A training opportunity is currently available with the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) within the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
HIV remains a significant public health issue. More than 700,000 American lives have been lost to HIV since 1981. In addition, more than 1.1 million Americans are currently living with HIV and many more are at risk of HIV infection. CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) works with other federal agencies, state and local health departments, national organizations, community-based organizations, the private sector, and advocates to reduce the spread of HIV in the United States by providing HIV testing so that HIV positive people are aware of their status; linking HIV positive people to HIV medical care; and ensuring that people have the information, motivation, and skills necessary to reduce their risk of HIV infection.
DHAP’s priorities include increasing knowledge of HIV status, preventing new HIV infections, reducing transmission of HIV, and responding rapidly to potential HIV outbreaks. The division’s work is critical to the success of Ending the Epidemic: A Plan for America (EHE). This bold initiative envisions a future where there are no new HIV infections. The selected participant will report to the Policy and Planning Team in DHAP’s Office of Policy, Planning, and Communication. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities:
The participant may also train in other policy related activities to enable the participant to develop skills in the breadth of policy functions at CDC that will well position the participant for a variety of potential future opportunities.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 7, 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by September 2020. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
