An opportunity is currently available with the Laboratory Reference and Research Branch (LRRB), Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), within the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

This project is focused on diagnostic assays for the detection of STD pathogens such as Neisseria gonorrhea and Chlamydia trachomatis. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will obtain technical experience operating automated instrumentation for clinical diagnostics, conducting quality control activities, analyzing and interpreting test results, and developing troubleshooting skills. The participant will collaborate closely with CDC microbiologists and epidemiologists to support surveillance activities on these pathogens in specific populations. 

This research opportunity may provide the opportunity for the participant to be involved in the following activities:

• Performing clinical diagnostic testing to support STD surveillance activities
• Operation of automated laboratory instrumentation
• Understanding clinical assay performance metrics
• Contributing to the preparation of project protocols and documents, summaries, presentations, manuscripts and figures of laboratory data and results
• Enhance professional growth and development by participating in trainings, workshops, conferences, and in-service meetings

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the end of May 2020.  Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

• Knowledge of bacterial pathogens and their detection
• Knowledge of molecular biology methods
• Interest in STD pathogens and public health
• Familiarity with quality management and good laboratory documentation skills
• Strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
