A fellowship opportunity is available with the Laboratory Branch, Division of Tuberculosis Elimination, within the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The mission of the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE) is to promote health and quality of life by preventing, controlling, and eventually eliminating tuberculosis in the United States.

The research participant will be placed in the Applied Research Team (ART) in the Division of TB Elimination Laboratory Branch. The projects associated with this opportunity will focus on two main areas: host-directed therapies and drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The participant will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art technologies to address these areas.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities: 

• Performing whole genome sequencing of M. tuberculosis
• Performing research using in vitro models
• Performing immunological assays including 3D cell culture, flow cytometry and other assays, as needed
• Developing and validating new protocols
• Keeping meticulous records and laboratory notebook
• Participating in Branch and Team meetings

This fellow will be engaged with Branch leadership and technical staff. Opportunities for networking with subject matter experts will be made available.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2019

The qualified candidate must have received a master's or doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular genetics, immunology or other related disciplines. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are strongly desired.
