An opportunity is available in the Office of Health Equity, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The mission of the Office of Health Equity is to promote health equity (which is the absence of systematic unfair disparities in health) and reduce health disparities among populations disproportionately affected by HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis and other related conditions. OHE supports activities which aim to reduce health inequities among affected populations in NCHHSTP research, surveillance, policy, health communication, prevention and intervention programs, capacity building, and partnerships.
The objective of this opportunity is to conduct research on effective strategies for measuring, tracking and reducing population-level disparities in the incidence, morbidity and mortality of HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB and Viral Hepatitis among groups that are disproportionately affected by these diseases. Examples of disproportionately affected populations include young adults, women, racial/ethnic minorities, persons who inject drugs, sexual and gender minorities, and other populations. Examples of disparities include (but are not limited to) population-level differences in rates of infection, testing, linkage to treatment for persons diagnosed with infection, receipt of treatment, receipt of supportive services, effectiveness of treatment, death resulting from infection or other aspects of incidence, morbidity and mortality.
The ORISE Participant will collaborate with members of the NCHHSTP Office of Health Equity and other NCHHSTP colleagues to design and implement a research project/s or activities suitable for publication that contribute meaningfully to awareness of effective strategies to reduce disparities in HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB and viral hepatitis and improve school health among one or more disproportionately affected populations. Effective strategies will support the guiding principal of high impact prevention, which is a public health approach to disease prevention in which proven, cost-effective and scalable interventions are implemented for preventing the greatest amount of infections or for reducing disparities, given available resources. With the support of the project mentor, the Participant will have the opportunity to learn how to make recommendations to senior scientists and management officials and other professionals regarding effective strategies.
The ORISE/CDC Research Participant may also have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:
• Designing and implementing research studies.
• Updating annual inventory of activities at NCHHSTP that address social determinants of health, correctional health, reduction of health disparities and promotion of health equity.
• Conducting a systematic review of the published scientific literature, based on a pressing research question.
• Supporting efforts to monitor progress on White House Executive Orders for improving health in racial and ethnic minority populations.
• Utilizing publicly-available datasets to analyze trends in disparities in HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB and Viral Hepatitis among select populations.
• Co-writing and submitting a scientific manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal .
• Orally presenting as part of the NCHHSTP Health Equity Speaker Series on a topic related to health equity, health disparities and/or the social determinants of health.
• Participating in professional development opportunities available through CDC University.
• attending meetings of scientific working groups.
• Assisting with the planning, implementation and evaluation of events that support that mission of the Office of Health Equity including lectures, collaborative meetings, symposia, professional development events and other activities.
• participating in the planning and development of activities involving collaboration among the five NCHHSTP Divisions as part of the NCHHSTP Health Equity Working Group, the NCHHSTP Correctional Health Working Group, or other Office of Health Equity-led working group.
• attending meetings for planning, monitoring and evaluation of activities implemented by grantees that receive cooperative agreement funding from CDC
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Applicants that do not have health insurance are still encouraged to apply, as health insurance through ORAU is available and the hosting organization will provide a stipend to help cover the cost of monthly premiums in the ORAU health insurance plan. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
PhD or equivalent in public health, epidemiology, social epidemiology, population health, applied statistics, biostatistics, mathematical modeling, computer data analysis, or related field earned within the past five years (60 months).
Proficient in a major software application for statistical analysis, such as SAS, R or Stata. Participants may receive professional development training through CDC University to facilitate greater proficiency in statistical analysis and SAS.
