A fellowship opportunity is available at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), within the Surveillance and Data Management Branch (SDMB) of the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP).
DSTDP’s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development, and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications. The mission of SDMB is to capture state-level STD morbidity data, assess STD burden and trends, and develop and conduct sentinel surveillance of STDs and STD adverse outcomes. These surveillance activities provide a foundation for the annual STD Surveillance Report. Additionally, SDMB evaluates and provides recommendations for improving STD surveillance systems and provides guidance on the inclusion of STD data elements into information systems that can electronically receive, store, and transmit STD morbidity and case management data. The Branch also monitors and evaluates trends in implementation and adoption of health information technologies (HIT) and assesses the potential of health information exchanges and electronic health records as sources of notifiable disease reports.
The fellow may gain experience by:
- Assembling and analyzing complex epidemiologic and laboratory survey data describing STD policies, protocols, program data, and/or diagnostic testing;
- Conducting bio-statistical data analysis, involving quantitative data collected on standardized reporting forms
- Developing written reports describing survey or other analysis findings, including tables, figures, and graphs that may be published or disseminated to public health agencies
- Co-authoring scientific abstracts, papers, and reports for publication and presentation at scientific meetings
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
- Master’s degree in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, public health, computer science informatics, or similar relevant field required. Applicants must have received their degree within the last five years, or expect to complete all requirements for such a degree prior to starting the fellowship.
- Knowledge of health information systems is most desired.
Highly qualified candidates would possess:
- Knowledge and experience in quantitative analysis techniques, including facility in at least one common-used, quantitative package is required
- Experience with the SAS software package is preferred
- Technical scientific report writing and publishing experience
