CDC Office and Location: A research and training opportunity is available in the Poxvirus and Rabies Branch (PRB), Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP) of the National Centers for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: An ORISE Fellowship Opportunity is currently available for a highly motivated individual to carry out projects related to clinical diagnostic testing and genomic sequencing of poxviruses and rabies virus in the Poxvirus and Rabies Branch in the Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.
Learning Objectives: The participant will collaborate with PRB staff to:
- Improve sequence analysis pipelines and workflows by improving functionality, visualization and tools for specific problems.
- Build and maintain data systems and pipelines for organizing and analyzing genomic, phenotypic and other data.
- Engage with team members, public sequence data repositories and collaborators around the world to investigate and resolve data quality concerns in a timely manner.
- Conduct genomic epidemiologic studies on the diversity and evolution of viruses to assess the risk of emerging variants towards current diagnostic tests, therapeutics or vaccines
- Use mathematical and computational approaches to understand the evolutionary and epidemiological patterns of viruses.
- Ensure the appropriate genomic analysis methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable quality controls are correctly conducted in accordance with standard protocols.
- Collaborate with partners in U.S. and international public health laboratories and industry
- Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, papers and other documents to highlight findings, accomplishments, and surveillance data.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's, master’s, or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Microbiology, Mathematics), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before May 31, 2023. Most recent degree must have been received in the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
- 3-5 years of work experience using a programming language such as Perl, Python, or R.
- Expertise in pipeline development (e.g. Bash, NextFlow) and bioinformatic topics (e.g. phylogenetics, protein modeling, microbiome analysis), fluency with Linux/Unix and core command line utilities, including BASH scripting is preferred.
I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
