CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Viral Special Pathogens Branch (VSBP) within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: A research opportunity is currently available in the Viral Special Pathogens Branch (VSBP) within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The selected participant will be a part of the Virus Host Ecology Team, which is responsible for research involving zoonotic viruses including filoviruses, henipaviruses, hantaviruses, bunyaviruses and arenaviruses. Under the guidance of the mentor, the participant will learn and contribute to ecological research on hemorrhagic fever viruses, perform domestic and international field work, diagnostic and pathogen discovery laboratory work, and collaborate with laboratory and epidemiological staff across the CDC as well as with international collaborators.
Learning Objectives: Specific learning research opportunities will focus on the development of small mammal trapping and handling, sample collection and management, and laboratory techniques involving zoonotic viruses including filoviruses, hantaviruses, bunyaviruses, arenaviruses and henipaviruses. These opportunities may include: - learning small mammal trapping techniques and field work coordination and planning - learning field and laboratory necropsy procedures - learning field and laboratory safety - learning captive breeding colony management - learning laboratory diagnostic and pathogen discovery techniques - learning biosafety level (BSL and ABSL) 3 and 4 laboratory practices and regulations
The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by June 30, 2023. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience at biosafety level 2, 3, or 4
- Experience in molecular virological techniques
- Strong interest in, or experience with field work
- Interest or experience in pathogen discovery and disease ecology
- Degree: Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 6/30/2023 11:59:00 PM.
