CDC Office and Location: A training opportunity is available within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) with the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch’s Domestic WASH Epidemiology Team located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Research Project: This appointment is in CDC’s Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch’s Domestic WASH Epidemiology Team. The Team’s mission is to maximize the health, productivity, and well-being of people in the United States through improved and sustained access to safe water for drinking, recreation, and other uses; adequate sanitation; and basic hygiene practices.
CDC’s Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch is seeking an ORISE fellow to join a multidisciplinary team and support healthy swimming (www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming) activities focused on treated (e.g., in pools) or untreated (e.g., in lakes) recreational water.
Learning Objectives: The ORISE Fellow will build and hone skills to manage, analyze, and summarize data and interpret findings to characterize the epidemiology of recreational water–associated illness and injury and prepare findings for presentation on the web, in webinars or conferences, and in peer-reviewed manuscripts. The Fellow will also learn how to use findings to inform evidence-based healthy swimming policy (e.g., CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code; www.cdc.gov/mahc) and communication (e.g., Healthy and Safe Swimming Week) efforts. Finally, the Fellow will also be able to make abstract public health principles learned in the classroom more concrete through other activities (e.g., assist in outbreak consultations or investigations). Cross-training through other domestic water, sanitation, or hygiene (WASH) activities might also be available.
Mentor(s): The mentor(s) for this opportunity Michele Hlavsa (acz3@cdc.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research, please contact the mentor(s).
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Background Check Information: The fellow will be subject to standard federal background investigation, Department of Justice background investigation, and initial and ongoing personnel suitability review.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program.
