CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP) Poxvirus and Rabies Branch (PRB) within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Research Project: The selected participant will focus on being trained to support all aspects of animal challenge studies within the PRB. The fellow will be trained to support all areas of animal challenge work within the branch, including preparation of supplies necessary for conducting in vivo research, animal sampling during challenge studies, performing necropsies and processing samples, as well as trained to perform molecular assays to confirm presence of virus and for determination of immune response following infection (real-time PCR, tissue culture, ELISA for determination of immune response, Western Blot, DFA, and RFFIT assays), as well as other miscellaneous assays as necessary to fully understand the animal challenge study
results.
The participant may also assist in supporting the VHMI teams’ critical in vitro research as needed. The fellow may be trained to perform diagnostic assays, as well as help with research goals designed to better understand the pathogenicity of orthopoxviruses and lyssaviruses and will learn to test the efficacy of next-generation medical countermeasures against a viral infection in vitro. Standard in vitro methods will be taught, such as real-time PCR, DFA, tissue culture for determination of viable virus, ELISA or RFFIT for determination of immune response, and Western Blot. There will be additional duties expected, such as helping with preparation of work material for other laboratory experiments. This would include, but is not limited to, learning to plate tissue culture cells, making dilutions, making media, preparing reagents and upkeep/inventory with the weekly maintenance of equipment, laboratory space and/or laboratory supplies.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Biology, Animal Sciences). Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
- Familiarity with basic computer programs such as Excel and Power Point
- Experience with laboratory animal care and techniques
- Experience with laboratory imaging and other animal clinical care tasks would be advantageous
- Basic laboratory skills such as cell culture
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Proven to be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and able to follow supervisor's instructions
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
- Degree: Bachelor's Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
