CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Chronic Viral Disease Branch (CVDB) within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: The selected participant will join laboratory staff in projects related to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). S/he will participate with multi-site clinical studies, biorepository establishment and development of specimen management databases, specimen processing, molecular testing, sequence and data analyses, and laboratory quality management systems.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, specific training opportunities may include:

  • Development/management of biorepository databases like Freezerworks. This can involve building adequate IT infrastructure to track and monitor specimen location, handling, processing, checking-in and checking-out of biological materials and associated data sets representing a number of large-scale case-control and longitudinal studies
  • Developing specimen life-cycle attributes with the knowledge of relational database structures
  • Cataloguing, processing, and storing biologic samples while observing all safety guidelines
  • Nucleic acid extraction (DNA and RNA), purification and evaluation of quality
  • Laboratory testing that employs a variety of molecular techniques (such as PCR, real-time PCR, and next generation sequencing) related to genotyping/variant determination, gene copy number determination, DNA methylation and gene expression projects; metabolic, cytokine and other assays may also be studied
  • Participating in assay optimization and development to carry out molecular epidemiologic studies that may be focused on pathways involved with neuro-immune regulation, ion channels, and transporters
  • Documentation of laboratory activities, data, summaries
  • Quality control and safety procedures necessary for the performance of laboratory protocols and working with biohazard materials
  • Participating in laboratory quality management activities
  • Participating in the weekly Branch meetings
Mentor(s)The mentor(s) for this opportunity is Mangalathu S. Rajeevan (mor4@cdc.gov). Please contact them if you have questions about the nature of this research.
