Research Project: The selected participant will be a part of the Molecular Pathogenesis and Therapeutics Team, which is responsible for research on viral diseases including henipaviruses, hantaviruses, filoviruses, bunyaviruses and arenaviruses. Under the guidance of the mentor, the participant will learn and contribute to research on hemorrhagic fever viruses, evaluate therapeutics for such viruses, and collaborate with laboratory and epidemiological staff across CDC.

Learning Objectives: Specific learning research opportunities will focus on the development of candidate therapeutics for agents including
henipaviruses, hantaviruses, filoviruses, bunyaviruses and arenaviruses, and may include:
  • Learning biosafety level 3 and 4 laboratory practices and regulations
  • Learning how to culture and characterize high-hazard viruses
  • Learning how to perform therapeutic screening studies under high containment
  • Learning how to dissect mechanisms-of-action of candidate antiviral compounds
  • The opportunity to participate in national and international meetings, workshops and training courses
Mentor(s)The mentors for this opportunity are Mike Flint (vfa3@cdc.gov) and Christina Spiropoulou (ccs8@cdc.gov). Please contact them if you have questions about the nature of this research.
