CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections (DPEI) within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. 

Research Project: The fellow will collaborate closely with the Associate Director for Laboratory Science as well as subject matter experts from the Poxvirus laboratory, Office of Associate Director for Communications, National Center for Infectious Diseases Communication office and various other CDC teams. Project will entail final production and deployment of existing mobile application for use by State Epidemiologists and Poxvirus Branch staff for human poxvirus testing, rule-out algorithm and data interpretation and training assessment poxvirus mobile application in an exercise scenario.  

Opportunities may include:

  • Collaborating with subject matter expert to streamline mobile application for App store deployment for use by CDC experts and external partners
  • Modifying app coding for current app security and user experience standards including finalizing checklist for CDC web developers team using current best practices
  • Working with poxvirus subject matter experts for exercise scenario with U.S. state epidemiologists
  • Producing and implementing communication plans for scientific publications or projects
  • Creating training and user experience metrics for end-users

As the fellow gains knowledge, the fellow may also participate in projects related to health equity, infectious disease preparedness, or public health communicating.   

Learning Objectives:
  • How to apply mobile app informatics for public health programs and public health response decision makers
  • To communicate clearly with internal and external, governmental and non-governmental audiences
  • How to identify communication objectives, analyze audiences, and develop the appropriate metrics for internal products to meet objectives and end-user audience needs

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: April 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for 6 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Natural Sciences), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by May 31, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • 1+ years developing computer code related to public health.
  • Experience editing code for front and back end mobile applications including using Reactive Native with JavaScript and Objective-C
  • Working knowledge and application of Flutter framework to design mobile apps and web counterparts following modern development paradigms.
  • Experience formatting and conducting usability tests for mobile applications.
  • Ability to update mobile application content on both Android and iOS-based applications
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to additional requests
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities
