CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Infectious Disease Pathology Branch (IDPB) within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The fellow will train in the Infectious Disease Pathology Branch (IDPB). IDPB is the primary unit within CDC responsible for conducting laboratory studies and investigations of infectious disease of unknown etiologies. IDPB’s core function provides diagnostic testing of tissues from patients with confirmed or suspected infectious diseases, and epidemiologic support for investigations from which tissue samples might be obtained for laboratory evaluation. IDPB has an ongoing and important role in the response to cases and outbreaks of public health importance, and as part of agency-wide public health responses.

Research Project: The fellow will train to coordinate and organize communications and data shared between CDC, state public health and clinical partners related to tissue-based diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2. This will include collaboration with the CDC Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Mothers and Babies (SET-NET) and Birth Defects Study to Evaluate Pregnancy exposures (BD-Steps) investigators and state public health partners who have been funded to conduct the project “Surveillance and laboratory evaluation of stillbirths affected by COVID-19 in selected jurisdictions”; data management and analysis of clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory data collected from cases submitted as part of this project.

• Coordinating communications regarding submission of specimens for SARS-CoV-2 testing, including specimens submitted for tissue-based testing from funded partners
• Coordinating communications with CDC and state public health partners, including with funded partners regarding project data management, analysis, logistics and planning
• Performing basic statistical analyses of epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory data using statistical packages such as SAS
• Developing data management systems using platforms such as RedCap
• Participate in IDPB and Epidemiology and Operations Team activities, meetings, evaluations, analyses, and data dissemination activities
• Collaborating with CDC colleagues to complete other duties as assigned (e.g., assist in outbreak or case consultations or investigations)

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by June 30, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

• SAS or other statistical software programs, epidemiologic principles, and statistics
• Microsoft Excel and Access, including knowledge of database design
• RedCap, including knowledge of database design and data management
• Basic medical terminology and medical records abstraction
• Excellent problem-solving skills, high motivation, strong attention to detail, and ability to multi-task
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
