CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

CDC is the nation's premier public health agency. Located within NCEZID, DHQP aims to protect patients, protect healthcare personnel, and promote safety, quality, and value in both national and international healthcare delivery systems. In carrying out this mission, DHQP focuses on the public health- healthcare interface, healthcare processes and outcomes, healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, adverse events (such as drug side effects and medical errors) affecting patients and healthcare personnel, and the healthcare environment. DHQP plays a leading role in the fight against COVID-19, providing infection control guidance, data, and support to states. DHQP has surveillance, laboratory, innovation and research, prevention and response, and global activities. DHQP’s State Strategy and Evaluation Team (SSET) sits in the Office of the Director. SSET's goal is to understand and leverage how healthcare-associated infections/antimicrobial resistance (HAI/AR) programs strategically engage with public health and healthcare partners to address HAIs/AR in states and then to identify ways in which DHQP and states can advance partner networks to facilitate HAI/AR activities.

The fellow will have opportunities with the State Strategy and Evaluation Team (SSET) to identify ways in which DHQP and states can advance partner networks to facilitate HAI/AR prevention activities and accelerate prevention progress. Through partnership engagement, analysis, evaluation and communication, SSET aims to identify and explain the factors that are essential for successful prevention outcomes, and to leverage how HAI/AR programs strategically engage with public health and healthcare partners to prevent HAIs/AR in select state and local jurisdictions. We seek to further support and strengthen the healthcare-public health relationships to increase collaboration and impact. 

Research Project: The Fellow's experience will include the following opportunities: 

• Engage with the team to design and implement consulting opportunities with state and local health departments and their partners interested in improving their connections and collaborations for HAI/AR prevention
• Assess the ways in which state and local partner networks form, develop, and sustain connections for effective response and prevention impact, using the Success Framework for HAI/AR Prevention Networks
• Collaborate with federal, state and local public health and partner organizations to facilitate effective partnerships to further HAI/AR impact in states 
• Engage with state and local public health departments as they develop strategic plans for HAI/AR prevention
• Engage with national partner associations such as the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO), the American Hospitals Association (AHA), through cooperative agreements to engage and promote private-public partner networks for HAI/AR prevention
• Engage and strategically leverage subject matter expertise across the division on cross-cutting divisional interest areas such as health equity, rural health, and local public health capacity, along with partnership and prevention activities
• Conduct programmatic and evaluative analyses with the team on state and local public health HAI/AR programs to identify key partnerships that may contribute to a program's prevention success. Analysis may include literature searches, internet searches, focused analyses of state and local health department and healthcare partner website content, focused analyses of public health, healthcare, healthcare quality organizations content as it relates to HAI/AR prevention, including COVID-19
• Develop visuals, slides, one pagers, summaries, or stories that communicate examples of effective or successful HAI/AR programs and partnerships in states and local jurisdictions (skills in programs such Excel, PPT, Power Bi, data visualization are highly desirable)

Learning Objectives: The Fellow will have opportunities to learn about a variety of public health issues through seminars and cross-CDC programs. The Fellow will develop skills and experience in:

• collaborative team interactions  
• critical thinking and strategy
• engaging with state and local public health and healthcare organizations to develop, assess and strengthen partner networks for HAI/AR prevention
• interacting with non-profit groups and NGO’s
• using data to inform prevention
• writing and communicating effectively

DHQP is a very dynamic, effective and strategic division, and the Fellow will get to interact with people from a variety of backgrounds and levels of expertise. Many informal mentors will be accessible.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by the end of October 2021. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
