A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP), Infectious Diseases Pathology Branch (IDPB), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta Georgia.
The Infectious Diseases Pathology Branch (IDPB) has an ongoing and important role in the public health response to a large outbreak of Zika virus occurring in the Americas. IDPB conducts diagnostic testing (histopathologic examination, PCR and IHC) of fixed tissue specimens from suspect Zika virus cases. This effort requires close collaboration and communication with the EOC Zika Virus Response Epidemiology Team and Pregnancy and Birth Defects Task Force (PBDTF) to facilitate collection of appropriate clinical, laboratory and epidemiologic data regarding suspect cases, coordinate submission of appropriate pathologic specimens, report IDPB testing results to CDC, state/local health department partners and support data analysis that furthers the understanding of Zika virus epidemiology and pathogenesis.
The fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:
- Coordinate communication between Zika Virus Response Epidemiology Team, PBDTF, and IDPB (40%).
- Participate in response to inquiries for submission of specimens from suspect Zika virus cases.
- Coordinate final results reporting (i.e., Final Pathology Report) and interpretation with IDPB pathologists, molecular biologists and EOC staff.
- Assist with scheduling case review meetings.
- Participate in presentation of case histories to pathologists.
- Routine data entry of clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory information on suspect Zika virus cases (30%).
- Data entry of IDPB results into EOC database (Zika Tracker) once approved for preliminary internal release.
- Update internal IDPB databases (excel spreadsheets) with clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory information on suspect Zika virus cases.
- Participate in DCIPHER platform implementation to ensure proper integration of IDPB database elements.
- Generation of routine data analysis reports (10%).
- Conduct routine weekly/biweekly analyses of suspect case data.
- Present results to IDPB and EOC staff as appropriate.
- Participation in guidance development, data analysis projects, and publications (20%).
- Contribute to discussions about both internal and external guidance development, MMWRs, and other manuscripts under development.
- Conduct epidemiologic analysis and create outputs including graphs, charts, or power points that will convey important findings of data analysis.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Applicants must have received a master's degree in public health, or a related field within the last five years of the desired start date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the start date.
