A fellowship opportunity is available in the Enteric Disease Laboratory Branch (EDLB), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Enteric Disease Laboratory Branch has an opportunity to expand its program on Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Vibrio spp., and other foodborne pathogens. The Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) Initiative (http://www.cdc.gov/amd/) has provided an opportunity to transform public health microbiology. We foresee culture independent diagnostic methods as well as the ability to determine the genome sequence of hundreds of organisms simultaneously transforming public health surveillance and outbreak investigations in the very near future. We are currently developing tools for whole genome sequence analysis that will replace all of our traditional workflows, from identification and serotyping to antimicrobial resistance and virulence profiling, to highly discriminatory subtyping methods, all in line with a Quality Management System (QMS), Safety and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.

The National Enteric Reference Laboratory Team, EDLB is interested in identifying BS level microbiologists who may be interested in joining our multidisciplinary team during this exciting and transformational time. Our Laboratory team contributes to the prevention of foodborne and diarrheal diseases in the United States and abroad by facilitating detection, identification and characterization of enteric bacterial pathogens. We accomplish this goal by providing reference identification and laboratory-based disease surveillance for agents of foodborne and diarrheal diseases, training and consultation to national and international public health partners and participate in applied research projects focused on emerging technologies to identify and characterize enteric pathogens.

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

• Performing identification and serotyping of enteric pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella using phenotypic and molecular methods
• Developing and validating tools for whole genome sequence analysis in our reference identification workflows
• Consulting and training support for microbiologists in state and regional public health laboratories

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

• Applicant must have completed a bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field within five years of the starting date. Qualified candidates graduating in May 2016 are welcome to apply.
• Experience in a microbiology laboratory is preferred.
