CDC Office and Location: Three research opportunities are currently available with the Emergency Response Branch (ERB) within the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) at the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic and selected infectious diseases. Placement will be in ERB’s Toxins and Drugs of Abuse Laboratory which develops and applies methods to detect human exposure to toxins and drugs of abuse in support of emergency response scenarios and health studies and surveillance. Candidates may assist with the development and validation of cell-based assays to assess potencies of toxic compounds.
Learning Objectives: This fellowship will provide the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience, under the guidance of a mentor, in the development, implementation and troubleshooting of mass spectrometry methods and bioassays. The fellow will learn literature searching, data interpretation, quality assessment, document preparation, and presentation skills. The fellow will be handling clinical specimens, including blood and urine, as well as small quantities of toxins or drugs. Some MS and PhD level candidates may participate in the development, implementation and troubleshooting of electrophysiology and fluorescence based cellular assays as well as molecular assays. They will generate and analyze data, prepare written and oral reports of findings, and maintain a laboratory notebook. The fellow will share their experiences with both internal CDC and external federal and state partners. ERB is an CLIA accredited laboratory, and all tasks are performed in compliance with the standards as well as CDC and DLS policies and regulations.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 1, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed for up to five years upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Chemistry, Biology, Genetics), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before November 1, 2022. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in analytical testing
- Experience with using mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, or immunoassays
- Experience with sample preparation techniques for clinical specimens
- Experience with literature searching, data summarization, and report preparation
- Experience in RT-PCR
- Experience in cell culture and aseptic techniques
- Experience in cell-based assays and toxicological measurements
- Strong communication skills, ability to document processes, and work collaboratively as part of a team

I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
