CDC Office and Location: Two ORISE fellowship opportunities are currently available in the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. 

Research Project: These ORISE fellow opportunities involve being trained on and conducting a comprehensive landscape analysis on the scientific interventions of the funded Asthma recipients of the National Asthma Control Program. The selected participant(s) will receive training on the EXHALE scientifically-based strategies that have been proven to help to advance asthma control. These EXHALE strategies are implemented by recipients of one of the major asthma Cooperative Agreements that currently funds 23 states, one territory, and one city. EXHALE strategies are also leveraged by four Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) through a separate, but related Cooperative Agreement to provide asthma control resources to the entire nation. Currently, the Asthma and Air Quality Branch’s (AAQB) Program Services Team is seeking to train and guide a person to help us reach a thorough understanding of the current state of EXHALE strategy implementation. Data regarding these strategies are reported through several different mechanisms, including but not limited to Annual Performance Reports (APRs), Performance Measures (PMs), and other information.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant(s) will learn on the following projects and activities in the areas of programmatic support and materials development:

• Learning and implementing a comprehensive analysis to understand current public health implementation of the scientifically-backed EXHALE strategies, including state asthma policies, practices and programs (including but not limited to public health activities addressing outdoor air quality, which can affect asthma morbidity).
• Training on how to conduct environmental scans and literature reviews as needed.
• How to leverage quantitative and qualitative data to inform analysis.
• Learning and implementing methods to display EXHALE information into data visualizations.
• Comparing implemented activities to EXHALE technical guidance and existing strategic plans to understand how a program’s science and data support the program’s objectives.
• Improving and updating ways in which information around the EXHALE strategy implementation can be more easily accessed and analyzed.
• Training on developing and using infographics, tables, charts and other tools to convey scientific information and findings and learning to evaluate the existing resources and how to determine effectiveness.

Experiential learning will include meeting with AAQB staff to learn about the day-to-day asthma program implementation efforts related to EXHALE.

The participant(s) will increase their understanding of scientifically-backed public health approaches to asthma management and control. The participant(s) will also increase their knowledge and skills related to conceptualizing and implementing a comprehensive analysis, data collection and analysis techniques including both quantitative and qualitative data, and data visualization. The participant(s) will collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams within the branch to support objectives of the analysis. The participant(s) will also be trained on how to enhance presentation and oral communication skills by presenting stages of this training opportunity to branch staff.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 6, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Environmental Health, Public Health). Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
