CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Health Studies Section, within the Emergency Management, Radiation, and Chemical Branch (EMRCB), in the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Health Studies Section CDC’s Emergency Management, Radiation, and Chemical Branch (EMRCB) aims to reduce the negative public health consequences of environmental health disasters and emerging hazards. The Health Studies Section houses the National Chemical and Radiological Surveillance Program which is a partnership with the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) to perform public health surveillance on all US poison center calls uploaded to the National Poison Data System (NPDS); conducts epidemiologic investigations in response to outbreaks that are believed to have environmental causes; and works to build public health capacity to address radiation emergencies, emerging hazards, and outbreaks with suspected environmental or toxic etiology.

Research Project: Under the guidance of a collaborative team of epidemiologists and medical toxicologists, the selected participant will be involved in the following training opportunities:

• Support activities within the Poison Center and Public Health Community of Practice (CoP)
• Assist with activities within the National Poison Data System (NPDS)
• Be trained to assist staff with routine surveillance responsibilities for NPDS
  Be trained to collect, enter, manage, analyze, and disseminate data from epidemiological investigations and health studies within NPDS
• Learn to coordinate and manage CoP webinars, including assisting staff with organizing speakers and providing technical assistance to CoP membership
• Learn to improve web capacity by enhancing the online forum and website for the CoP

Learning Objectives:

• Gain experience in communication by assisting with the generation of communication materials (e.g., newsletters) for CoP members
• Improve statistical analysis skills by assisting with investigations within NPDS
• Gain knowledge about how to increase public health preparedness for responding to chemical and radiological incidents among partners by participating in technical assistance, response, and/or exercises
• Improve presentation and oral communication skills by presenting on their fellowship activities at Section meetings at least once per year.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified. Start date is flexible.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

• Training or experience in surveillance, epidemiology, environmental health, or healthcare program management
• Familiarity and/or interest in learning about the toxicological and radiological sciences/fields and public health preparedness
• Ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists, state, tribal, and local public health partners
• Experience with management and analysis of epidemiologic data
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
