Three research opportunities are currently available within the Water, Food & Environmental Health Services Branch (WFEHSB), Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Chamblee, Georgia. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, CDC is currently limiting occupancy on campuses. Successful applicants will be required to train remotely until further notice.

The WFEHSB mission is to strengthen the roles of state, tribal, local, territorial and national environmental health (EH) programs and their professionals to better anticipate, identify, and respond to adverse environmental exposures and their consequences for human health. Throughout the course of this research project the participant will be assigned to the WFEHSB EH Practice Section, which focuses on advancing the field of EH and supporting data-driven approaches to address environmental hazards and improve EH services.

The WFEHSB EH Practice Section currently manages the Environmental Health Capacity Cooperative Agreement (EHC CoAg) which aims to strengthen environmental health capacity (EHC) to detect, prevent, and control environmental health hazards through data-driven, evidence-based approaches. The EHC CoAg is composed of three major components (A, B, and C) and each component uses strategies to build capacity to use data, to identify, prevent and control EH hazards, and to evaluate the EH intervention impact. Component C supports environmental health response, recovery, mitigation, and other expenses related to 2018/2019 major disaster declarations. This fellowship opportunity primarily focuses on reducing or mitigating the impact of identified disaster-related EH hazards through the development and implementation of EH interventions. Opportunities to support activities under the EHC CoAg and possibly other CoAgs will be performed in collaboration with state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) jurisdictions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other federal agencies.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will interact with team members and receive training in:

  • Supporting the EHC CoAg (and possibly other CoAgs) through activities such as:
    • Monitoring grantee progress
    • Evaluation of grantee activities
    • Developing summaries of activities and outcomes
    • Providing technical assistance, consultation, and support for activities
    • Responding to EH technical assistance requests
  • Supporting additional EH Practice Section activities such as:
    • Using data and literature reviews to determine and recommend best practices
    • Developing EH educational and informational materials
    • Presenting at national conferences

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 19, 2020 (start date is flexible)

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Funds are available for travel and health insurance allowance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Chamblee, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.


The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

  • Coursework or experience in emergency management
  • Coursework or experience in grants and/or cooperative agreements
  • Knowledge of disaster response and/or recovery
  • Training or experience in evaluation
  • Experience in program/project management
  • Experience leading conference calls/meetings
  • Ability to understand and interpret analytical results
  • Ability to work both in a collaborative manner and independently while under the direction of a mentor
  • Ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary group of professionals and jurisdictional and NGO public health partners
  • Ability to manage complex tasks requiring attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
