A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Health Studies Section within CDC’s NCEH/DEHSP aims to reduce the negative public health consequences of environmental health disasters and emerging hazards by responding to natural and technological disasters, investigating outbreaks with suspected environmental or toxic etiology, and conducting applied epidemiologic studies to characterize health effects of environmental health disasters and emerging hazards. The Health Studies Section also houses the National Chemical and Radiological Surveillance Program which is a partnership with the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) to perform public health surveillance on all US poison center calls uploaded to the National Poison Data System (NPDS) and works to build public health capacity to respond to chemical and radiological emergencies and address emerging hazards.

Under the guidance of a team of epidemiologists and medical toxicologists, the selected participant will be involved in the following training opportunities:

• Contribute to activities of the Poison Center and Public Health Community of Practice (CoP)
  • Learn to coordinate and manage CoP webinars, including interacting with staff who organize speakers and provide technical assistance to CoP membership
  • Learn to improve web capacity by enhancing the online forum and website for the CoP
  • Gain experience in communication by participating in the generation of communication materials (e.g., newsletters) for CoP members
• Contribute to surveillance and epidemiologic activities using the National Poison Data System (NPDS)
  • Be trained to collaborate with staff on routine NPDS surveillance responsibilities
  • Be trained to collect, manage, analyze, and disseminate surveillance data
  • Improve statistical analysis skills by contributing to analytic projects within NPDS
• Gain knowledge about how CDC builds public health capacity for preparing for, responding to, and recovering from chemical and radiological incidents by participating in technical assistance, training, response, and/or exercises
• Improve presentation and oral communication skills by presenting research activities at Section meetings at least once per year

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degree and will reach completion by July 2020. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

• Training or experience in surveillance, epidemiology, or environmental health
• Familiarity and/or interest in learning about use of poison control center data, public health preparedness, and toxicological and radiological sciences
• Ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary group of CDC scientists, as well as with state, tribal, local, and territorial public health partners
• Experience with management and analysis of epidemiologic data
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 7/31/2020 11:59:00 PM.
