A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
DEHSP promotes and protects the health and quality of life of all people in the United States through conducting environmental health science and improving environmental health services. Its mission is supported by surveillance, epidemiologic studies, technical assistance, training, and emergency response activities through programs that provide critical environmental health capacity for state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments and other agencies with related responsibilities.
The participant will gain experience in the Lead Poisoning Prevention and Environmental Health Tracking Branch as part of the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program’s surveillance and prevention activities. The participant will strengthen his or her skills in data management, analysis, and interpretation; and gain experience in national data systems, environmental health surveillance, public health programs, and epidemiology.
The selected participant will have the opportunity to interact closely with public health program professionals in various roles and will gain experience through a primary project where he or she will collaborate with internal and external groups to review childhood lead poisoning prevention data for the purpose of comparing and contrasting differences between blood lead levels reported by CDC using a common case definition and by each state program using the state's own case definition. This project has the following learning objectives:
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. A relocation allowance will not be provided. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
