Description

There is a fellowhip opportunity at the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects (DEHHE), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia.

The mission of NCEH's Environmental Hazards and Health Effects Program is to conduct surveillance and investigations that increase knowledge about the relationship between human health and the environment and that use this knowledge to develop national public health programs and policies for preventing disease. The Division studies ways to prevent or control health problems associated with exposure to air pollution, radiation, and other toxicants, as well as health problems resulting from natural, technological, or terrorist disasters.

The fellow will be involved in the DEHHE Office of the Director, supporting the Associate Director for Communication (ADC). The fellow will analyze the division’s emergency and environmental communication web presence and design, consolidate and write content to achieve the division mission.

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Writing and editing: Drafting content for division web features, social media, and digital press kits as directed by ADC.
  • Communications analysis: Analyzing and reviewing content on division's web sites including emergency.cdc.gov content belonging to NCEH. Identifying outdated, duplicative, or inconsistent content and flag for change. Supporting branch communicators, scientists, and ADC in updating content and implementing a strategy to best share our emergency information.
  • Communication planning: Tracking all EHHE public communications products in production or clearance, preparing a weekly status report, maintaining overall plan for ADC, and division leadership.
  • Team organization: Logging and tracking all media calls, entering new cleared key messages into existing key message bank on the EHHE communications Sharepoint site.

The participant will learn principles of health communication science and practice that will be useful in positions involving communication of sensitive health topics to the public. He/she will also learn the principles of health communication science, environmental health and risk communication, and information analysis and architecture.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
