CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available with the Global Research, Evaluation, and Translation Team in the Office of Smoking and Health (OSH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Within CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) is the lead federal agency for comprehensive tobacco prevention and control. OSH prioritizes health equity, creating resources and opportunities for all people to be as healthy as possible. With this foundation, OSH saves lives and money by preventing and reducing commercial tobacco use—the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States.
Research Project: The Global Research, Evaluation, and Translation Team in the Global Tobacco Control Branch, Office on Smoking and Health is looking for an ORISE Fellow to participate with our dynamic, supportive, and collaborative team. The fellow would be mentored by the team’s epidemiologist in addition to collaborating with and learning from other team members, including the team lead, evaluation specialist(s), and health communicator(s).
Learning Objectives: The participant will be mentored and trained in global tobacco control and prevention. This includes the participant’s involvement in the following activities:
- Conduct literature reviews and/or environmental scans
- Perform qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed data analysis methods
- Translate scientific or evaluation findings for various audiences
- Develop health education and communication materials, such as success stories, newsletters, program summaries, fact sheets, social media postings, and infographics
- Disseminate information for internal and external audiences
There will be opportunities to assist with writing and publishing scientific manuscripts to communicate research findings and development of evaluation plans to assess implementation of global tobacco control activities. Specific tobacco-related projects will consider the interest of the participant and may span across global tobacco research, evaluation and/or translation.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 15, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Behavioral Science, Health Education, Health Communications), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before May 31, 2024. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Interested and qualified applicants would preferably possess the following skills and abilities:
- Public health, social, and/or behavioral science training or work experience
- Training, experience, or strong demonstrated interest in data dissemination
- Ability to work on projects independently with minimal supervision
- Experience managing relationships among interdisciplinary teams
- Highly organized and attentive to detail
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
- Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 5/31/2024 12:00:00 AM.

I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
