CDC Office and Location: An ORISE fellowship opportunity is available in the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will have the opportunity to train and gain experience in health informatics in the Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch within DHDSP. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 900,000 deaths annually. This opportunity will provide critical support to DHDSP’s efforts to leverage real-world clinical data (electronic health records and administrative claims) to improve public health surveillance and heath services research for cardiovascular disease. Projects will contribute to CDC’s high-priority data modernization efforts, such as the use of electronic health data for public health surveillance and research, and will address health equity issues, including identifying and studying differences by social and economic context and racial/ethnic group. 

Learning Objectives: The fellow will collaborate with health scientists and informaticists on the following activities:

• Coordinating and advising on three informatics projects which aggregate electronic health record (EHR) data across multiple data contributors to perform public health surveillance of hypertension and other cardiovascular disease risk factors.
• Using cleaned, aggregated, weighted, modeled, summary-level data from electronic health records to create data visualizations and dashboards for the public and partner organizations to explore and use the data.
• Develop and implement electronic phenotypes (case definitions) for identifying chronic disease conditions in electronic health records.
• Analyzing data from electronic health records and writing or coauthoring scientific manuscripts (for submission to peer reviewed journals) that leverage EHR data for public health surveillance, epidemiological research, and health services research.
• Developing data science projects, such as applying machine learning techniques to derive insights from electronic health record data, both structured and unstructured.
• Exploring the use of natural language processing to analyze free text clinical notes in electronic health record data.
• Informing data standards for the collection of social determinants of health data from electronic health records.
• Developing fact sheets and reports to highlight key successes of informatics projects.
• Giving internal and external presentations to showcase informatics project successes.
• Conducting literature reviews.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2023/Early 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
