CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Science Office, in the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This will be a 6-month remote opportunity with flexible hours and limited or no onsite presence (based on the selected applicant's preference).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

DHDSP has a mission to provide national leadership, public health and scientific expertise, and program support to optimize cardiovascular health for all. Priorities for the Division include reducing the risk as well as improving the management and control of hypercholesterolemia and hypertension and reducing the burden of stroke and heart disease.

Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will have the opportunity to train and gain experience in extracting, analyzing, and presenting heart disease and stroke prevention data using R and SAS statistical software. This project will address health equity issues, including summarizing state-specific differences in heart disease and stroke mortality rates by social and economic context, urban-rural status, or racial/ethnic group.

Learning Objectives: These activities may include:

  • Learning to query and analyze large datasets
  • Gaining experience writing R and SAS programs designed to improve the efficiency of producing cardiovascular disease summary statistics
  • Gaining experience writing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and government reports
  • Conducting literature reviews
  • Presenting the results to internal audiences, including DHDSP senior leaders
  • Other related activities as discussed with mentor that further the science base regarding cardiovascular disease prevention; the fellow may be involved in exploring underutilized data sources that capture heart disease and stroke related information and advancing knowledge about how these data sources can be used to improve or inform heart disease and stroke national estimates

Mentor(s)The mentor for this opportunity is LaTonia Richardson (ijs7@cdc.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s).
