CDC Office and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the Program Evaluation Team, Program Services Branch in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The Program Evaluation Team leads national evaluations of two important cancer screening programs, the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program | CDC) and the Colorectal Cancer Control Program (Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP) | CDC). To implement the NBCCEDP, DCPC provides funding to 71 organizations across the country to provide breast and cervical cancer screening to low-income, un- and under-insured women. For the CRCCP, DCPC provides funding to 35 organizations to implement evidence-based strategies in health care settings intended to increase colorectal cancer screening. The Program Evaluation Team conducts extensive, standardized data collections for both the NBCCEDP and CRCCP for program monitoring and evaluation. The Program Evaluation Team ensures data are of high quality and cleaned, then conducts analyses and disseminates data/results via data dashboards, presentations, and publications. The Team also leads several special studies to address particular evaluation questions that require varied methodological approaches. 

Learning Objectives: The ORISE participant will participate as part of the Program Evaluation Team, learning about program evaluation planning, methods and approaches. The ORISE participant will participate in conducting literature review, survey design and administration, data collection, data quality assurance processes, data management and data analysis, and data dissemination, including Tableau dashboard design. The ORISE participant will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of manuscripts for publication.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 31, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed up to five years upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination). Additionally, the fellow will follow the telework schedule based on guidance and recommendations applicable to all Division staff.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing a doctoral degree. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred Skills:

  • Work experience in public health
  • Knowledge of cancer prevention and control
  • Knowledge of and experience in program evaluation of public health programs
