CDC Office and Location: An opportunity is available with the Division of Population Health (DPH), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Healthy Tribes Program (HT) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The Healthy Tribes program includes a portfolio of three programs that aim to strengthen the public health infrastructure, promote cultural and traditional practices that support health and wellness, and integrate evidence-based chronic disease interventions to improve the health of Tribal communities.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor and subject matter experts, the ORISE Fellow will:

  • Assist with researching, gathering, compiling, and developing resource reference materials to support the Healthy Tribes program mission. Topics will include international and domestic Indigenous food sovereignty efforts and international and domestic agencies/organizations whose missions and priorities include food sovereignty efforts.
    • Learn how to conduct a literature search on all agencies and organizations who are doing work in the food sovereignty field
    • Learn how to conduct a search on legal authorities/regulations related to food sovereignty (i.e., World Health Organization (WHO), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other sovereign entities throughout the world)
    • Compile and analyze which resources are relevant for the constituents served by the CDC Healthy Tribes cooperative agreements
    • Develop a resource reference document on food sovereignty efforts for dissemination to CDC chronic disease divisions, tribes, tribal serving organizations and urban Indian institutes.
  • Identify and seek opportunities to increase the number of AIAN students and professionals entering the public health workforce.
    • Conduct a scan of existing workforce development opportunities at CDC
    • Identify opportunities that increase AIAN participation in existing workforce development opportunities such as ORISE, CDC's Public Health Associate Program (PHAP), Presidential Management Fellows (PMF), Inter-personnel Act placements (IPA), etc.
    • Create a resource list of workforce development programs that can be shared with AIAN students
  • Assist with planning, developing and implementing in-person and virtual learning platforms to share best practices, successful outcomes and lessons learned with recipients of the Healthy Tribes Program’s cooperative agreements and other audiences.
  • Be immersed and coordinate with Healthy Tribes staff on topics including chronic disease prevention; data sovereignty, Indigenous evaluation methods; policy, system and environmental (PSE) changes; and community-clinical linkages (CCL).
  • Assist with developing new initiatives, supporting collaborations, and developing publications that contribute to improvements in health among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations
  • Be Immersed and gain knowledge and experience with essential public health functions, public health core competencies, and workforce development.
  • Participate in staff meetings, division and center-wide meetings, conferences, and forums that highlight public health work in AIAN settings.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed up to five years upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination). Additionally, the fellow will follow the telework schedule based on guidance and recommendations applicable to all Division staff.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fieldsDegree must have been received within the past five years.

Worksite location will be in Albuquerque, NM. Fellow may be required to report to the CDC office once a week with a telework option in place due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to synthesize information into key messages
  • Literature review experience
  • Experience in public health workforce development preferable
  • Experience working with American Indian/Alaska Native populations, tribal health systems, and rural/urban Indian communities
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • 1-2 years experience in analyzing and summarizing data
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment
