CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) within the National Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) is at the leading edge of the nation’s efforts to end the devastation of diabetes. The division works with other federal agencies, state health departments, health care providers, and community organizations to identify people with prediabetes, prevent type 2 diabetes, prevent diabetes complications, and improve the health of all people with diabetes. These efforts have helped millions of Americans reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes and prevent or delay serious diabetes complications.

Research Project: The participant will be trained in the Health Education and Promotion (HEP) Team under the mentorship of Behavioral Science and Health Education SMEs. The fellow will participate in research, evaluation, and health promotion and collaborate with senior staff in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of various behavioral science and health promotion activities to prevent type 2 diabetes and prevent diabetes complications. The participant will be involved in project planning, development, implementation, and evaluation; support health promotion research and analysis; and support translation of diabetes science into learning and behavior change resources for professionals and lay people. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following activities:

  • Contribute to content updates to type 2 diabetes prevention resources. Activities may include: assisting with needs assessment of people with prediabetes, lifestyle change coaches and other health educators, health care providers, and programs working with people at risk for type 2 diabetes; reviewing content suggested by subject matter experts, assisting with the development of resources to support behavior change. Assisting with the development, dissemination and evaluation of training and support materials for lifestyle change program (LCP) coaches.
  • Contribute to the development of resources to support readiness and engagement of people at high risk for type 2 diabetes in behavior change programs. Opportunities include collaborating with contractors and staff using behavioral science and a human centered design approaches to develop solutions to increase readiness of people at risk for type 2 diabetes to enroll in the behavior change programs as well as solutions to increase retention. Specific activities may include supporting the design and evaluation of solutions, supporting the dissemination and adoption of new resources, and supporting the development of scientific presentations and papers related to the project.
  • Participate in the development of resources to support readiness and engagement of people with diabetes in Diabetes Self Management Education and Support (DSMES) Services. Opportunities include collaborating with contractors and staff using behavioral science and a human centered design approach to develop solutions to increase awareness of DSMES, referrals to DSMES, cultural relevancy of DSMES, and access to services. Specific activities may include supporting the design and evaluation of solutions, supporting the dissemination and adoption of new resources, and supporting the development of scientific presentations and papers related to the project.
  • Contribute to the design of professional development and continuing education (CE) opportunities for people working to address diabetes. Activities may include analysis of stakeholder needs to identify learning needs, and applying the results in the development, implementation and evaluation of science-based professional development and CE activities.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of technical assistance and training activities for CDC funded partners and other stakeholders based on adult learning principles and behavioral science. Opportunities include collaborating with staff and contractors to review stakeholder needs and identify appropriate training and TA approaches, supporting updates and enhancement to existing health promotion resources, and assisting in the design, delivery, and evaluation of training and TA activities.
  • Maintain effective collaborative relationships with internal center and division staff and external stakeholders to promote the use of science-based professional development and education resources

Learning Objectives: By the end of the fellowship the participant will be able to:

  • Describe how health promotion models and theories are applied to the development of public health interventions for diabetes management and type 2 prevention
  • Describe effective approaches to disseminating health education and promotion resources to a variety of audiences
  • Identify common challenges in disseminating health education and promotion resources and strategies to overcome them
  • Describe the role of a federal agency in the ongoing development of the public health workforce

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of basic needs assessment, learner analysis, and qualitative and quantitative health education evaluation methods.
  • Basic knowledge of adult learning principles, behavior change principles, and health promotion/education strategies. Familiarity with distance learning and eLearning a plus.
  • Track record in writing effective science-based health content in a variety of formats. Knowledge of clear communication and health literacy a plus.
  • Skills in oral communication techniques to participate on teams and work groups and make internal presentations
