CDC Office and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the Program Development and Evaluation Branch (PDEB) in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: The key goal of this project is to prevent and control obesity and other chronic diseases through healthful eating and physical activity. 

The participant will gain experience and training in the evaluation of nutrition and physical activity strategies. DNPAO utilizes a policy, systems, and environmental approach to address the role of nutrition and physical activity in improving the public's health and preventing and controlling chronic diseases. PDEB provides programmatic and evaluation technical assistance to 67 state and local recipients. The Branch also develops and disseminates tools, training, and resources to assist recipients in the implementation of evidence-based physical activity, nutrition, and obesity prevention strategies.

Learning Objectives
  • Serve as a member of the Program Evaluation Team to learn how to provide program evaluation guidance and technical assistance to state and local recipients on performance measures, evaluation plans, and long-term outcome evaluation
  • Learn to design national evaluations; collect and monitor process and outcome data to evaluate impact of recipient efforts
  • Learn to analyze and translate evaluation findings and practice-based evidence into products and publications
  • Practice facilitation of recipient peer-to-peer networking and collaboration
  • Learn subject matter expertise by participating in Division-wide work groups on strategic priority areas
  • Present learnings and evaluation findings to a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 13, 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:
  • Knowledge of program evaluation and translation, preferably in public health, and the ability to learn complex evaluation methods
  • Experience with providing technical assistance on a variety of topics and projects
  • Ability to learn independently 
  • Experience with both scientific and plain language writing
  • Strong written and oral skills
