Four research opportunities are currently available with the Division of Birth Defects and Infant Disorders (DBDID) of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

This research project will be part of the COVID-19 Emergency Operations Center response efforts on the State, Tribal, Local and Territorial (STLT) Task Force. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training in:

  • Facilitating data reporting and synthesis from multiple sources to generate key reports, tables, maps, and emails
  • Triage of or response to incoming requests, inquiries, and other correspondences
  • Quality assurance and control of multiple types of data
  • Liaising between the groups who organize and track deployments, correspond with local health departments, and correspond with other CDC groups within the response

The participant will develop skills in data management, analysis, and synthesis that will well position the participant for a variety of potential future opportunities.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 12, 2020

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.


The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the start date of the appointment. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred Skills:

  • The fellow should have a strong data management / communications / public health background including these following qualifications:
    • Experience in general data management or analysis
    • Proficiency in a statistical software (e.g., SAS,R)
    • Proficiency in Excel and Word
    • Experience in geographical mapping (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS,R)
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent organization and time management skills
