A fellowship opportunity is available with the Developmental Disabilities Branch, Division of Congenital and Developmental Disorders (DCDD), within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

NCBDDD’s mission is to promote the health of babies, children and adults and to enhance the potential for full, productive living. To achieve this mission, NCBDDD focuses on: identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities; helping children to develop and reach their full potential; and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities, including autism and developmental disabilities. Under the direction of senior scientists and project coordinators, participants will train within the Epidemiology and the Surveillance Teams of the Developmental Disabilities Branch, in the analysis of public health data and identification of strategies with the potential to influence constituents’ health care associated with developmental disorders. Participants are assigned to train on various research study projects on congenital and developmental disabilities, and to train in functions related to monitor changes in prevalence and contributing risk factors, and prevention policies and program messages.

Under the guidance of mentors of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Teams, the selected participant will be involved in the following projects and activities: 

• Preparing and assembling research study materials
• Reviewing and sending/tracking study materials
• Performing quality checks on all study forms received from study participants
• Designing and developing study methods including data linkages with vital records and census indicators, and compilation of analysis datasets
• Analyzing data for major publications and leading analytic strategies for self-initiated publications and presentations
• Developing key communication strategies for dissemination of surveillance and epidemiologic study findings
• Developing and implementing program evaluation methods
• Reporting program evaluation findings and recommendations
• Other special projects/training as needed

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 20, 2019

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree in public health, health science or epidemiology. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
