A research opportunity is currently available within the Influenza Division (ID), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ID provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally.

The Pathogenesis Laboratory Team in the Immunology and Pathogenesis Branch works to identify molecular correlates of influenza pathogenesis and transmission and to develop and improve model systems for risk assessment of emerging influenza viruses that pose a threat to public health. Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will learn to evaluate clinical and laboratory samples collected during in vitro and in vivo influenza experiments to identify key viral adaptations to mammalian hosts. Molecular assays, such as RNA/DNA extractions, real-time RT-PCR, and deep sequencing will be performed with particular emphasis on the subsequent data analysis and interpretation using bioinformatics applications.  

The participant will receive training regarding influenza virology, BSL2 and BSL2-enhanced laboratory practices, nucleic acid extraction methods from a wide range of biological samples and tissue types, and an array of molecular analytical tools. Opportunities for scientific writing and publication will be available based on experimental results.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2020

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

• Hands-on laboratory experience using molecular biology methods
• Experience with RNA/DNA extractions, real-time RT-PCR, next generation sequencing technologies, data management, and bioinformatics
• Experience in virology
