A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Clinical Chemistry Branch (CCB) at the DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support to gain insights into viral protein structures and interactions to support vaccine development. CCB applies a range of bioanalytical approaches, including intact protein analysis, glycan analysis, chemical footprinting, and hydrogen/deuterium exchange, in conjunction with mass spectrometry to reveal the mechanisms of infection in influenza and coronavirus related proteins and provide information for vaccine development.
Most of the time and activities in this project will be connected to method development and application of advanced chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods. The research includes preparation of standards, operation and troubleshooting liquid handler equipment, running LC/MS/MS instruments, data processing/archiving placing, purchase orders, service calls, maintenance of chemicals and supplies inventory. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in research activities in coordination with senior PhD members of influenza structure group and will include conducting experiments, literature search and writing reports. The participant will receive training and hands-on experience on advanced bioanalytical techniques, proteomic/mass spectrometry techniques in addition to CDC required safety trainings.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 3, 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
