Two research opportunities are currently available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will be trained on all aspects of sample accession and tracking for samples coming into the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS). The participant will use advanced databases for accession and tracking and preparation of bar-coded labels for samples and aliquot samples as necessary. A major project related to this fellowship experience will be to interact with the sample logistics laboratory chief in designing and carrying out research into different biological matrices sample homogeneity under storage, shipping and aliquoting environments to which our samples are typically exposed. Collection protocols, shipping and handling guidance will be updated to reflect outcomes of the study. The participant will be involved in enhancing existing tracking methodology currently utilized in the branch for maintaining supplies of biological sample collection devices. The participant will be trained on the steps used to ensure all supplies, that require prior testing or treatments, are pre-screened (lot tested), or treated and that the process is well documented. The participant will be instructed in proper documentation processes that meet the Quality standards of the CLIA regulations and the Division of Laboratory Science Policies & Procedures. The participant will be trained in safe laboratory practices.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by July 2020. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Candidates with a current phlebotomy certificate are preferred.
