A fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic and selected infectious diseases. The Tobacco and Volatiles Branch (TVB) supports this through its own mission, which is to produce laboratory science that supports effective regulation to reduce individual and population exposure to addictive and toxic substances from tobacco products and environmental sources.

The training involves activities such as sample preparation using automated equipment, analysis of samples by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, data processing and analysis using complex software and data evaluation procedures, and presentation of results. Additionally, the chosen candidates will gain experience developing and/or improving analytical methods to detect biomarkers of exposure in biological fluids (i.e., urine, blood). These activities will be performed in compliance with DLS policies and regulations, such as those outlined in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA).

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

• Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree in chemistry earned within the last five years required
• Experience in chemical and analytical laboratory work required
• Experience developing ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based methods for the analysis of small molecules found in urine.
• Demonstrated high level of proficiency using Sciex Analyst and MultiQuant software.
• Experience working with complex liquid handling systems (e.g., Hamilton STARLET, Biotage Extrahera)
• Basic/intermediate knowledge of statistical analysis using JMP or SAS.
•  Experience conducting routine laboratory tasks independently.
