A research opportunity is currently available with the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

DHDSP has a mission to provide public health leadership to improve cardiovascular health for all and to reduce the burden and eliminate disparities associated with heart disease and stroke. The Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch (ESB) is a team of epidemiologists, statisticians, and data scientists within DHDSP. ESB produces scientific findings and reports that enable CDC and its partners to respond to emerging health risks and promote public health practices related to heart disease and stroke prevention.

The ESB endeavors to:

• Conduct surveillance and epidemiology research
• Collaborate with data scientists and health informatics professionals to analyze electronic health record data and novel sources of data
• Disseminate data in a variety of formats (e.g., maps, scientific articles, evaluation reports, computer-based tools and systems, other online resources)
• Collaborate with internal and external partners to inform public health strategies
• Provide key programmatic support to the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program, Million Hearts® and CVD Epidemiology and Surveillance

The participant will be involved with a team that monitors patterns and trends related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as high blood pressure, sodium consumption, health behaviors and outcomes, patient access to care, public awareness, and geographic variation and health disparities among different ethnic groups. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities:

• Gain experience in epidemiology and surveillance of heart disease and stroke
• Gain experience in analyzing electronic health record data and novel sources of data
• Learn to analyze data from projects that collect data on cardiovascular risk
• Participate in the dissemination of data in various formats (e.g., scientific articles, evaluation reports, computer-based tools and systems, other online resources)
• Contribute to the development of methods of monitoring publications for heart disease and stroke prevention

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the start date of the appointment. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
