CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Travelers' Health Branch (THB) of the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ), within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ) works to reduce morbidity and mortality among immigrants, refugees, travelers, expatriates, and other globally mobile populations, and to prevent the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases through regulation, science, research, preparedness, and response.

Research Project: THB’s mission is to enhance the health and safety of U.S. travelers and U.S. citizens living abroad by using new data sources, surveillance systems, and analytical models to articulate global risk assessments and provide the most appropriate risk reduction recommendations for international destinations.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following project activities:

  • Collaborate with partners within and external to CDC to use innovative approaches to expanding genomic surveillance efforts among inbound travelers to the United States.
  • Use surveillance data to inform risk assessments for the Travel Health Notices.
  • Apply epidemiologic principles to investigate the burden and cause(s) of travel-related health problems and evaluate prevention measures.
  • Research outcomes which impact significant travel health-related public health programs.

In this role, the fellow will have an opportunity to collaborate with medical officers, epidemiologists, and health
communicators on the team, in addition to different subject matter experts across CDC and professionals and partners
from outside CDC.

Learning Objectives: The selected participant will gain experience with the design, implementation and analysis of epidemiological studies related to travel-associated diseases (i.e. COVID-19, dengue, malaria, zika, yellow fever), as well as identifying risk factors and developing public health recommendations for travel-related infectious diseases.
