A research opportunity is currently available with the Travelers' Health Branch (THB), Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ), within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
THB’s mission is to enhance the health and safety of U.S. travelers and U.S. citizens living abroad by using new data sources, surveillance systems, and analytical models to articulate global risk assessments and provide the most appropriate risk reduction recommendations for destinations across the globe.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will gain training in surveillance and epidemiological study design, development, conduct, and analysis of travel-related diseases (i.e. dengue, malaria, Zika, yellow fever) on its causes, risk factors and medical treatment and recommendations. The participant will also be involved with various activities within the branch, including systematic assessment of program or project’s activities, processes, inputs, outputs, and outcomes to determine program value, worth, and improvement; Global Situational Awareness Report and Travel Health Notice processes and postings. The participant will use their theoretical knowledge and learn to identify and define the behavioral and social science aspects of public health issues, problems and opportunities through the hands on application of rigorous data collection, surveillance methods and statistical techniques; and assess risk and protective factors for travel health outcomes in the social and physical environment including individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and societal levels.
The participant will have an opportunity to collaborate with medical officers, epidemiologists, and health communicators on the team, in addition to different subject matter experts across CDC and professionals and partners from outside CDC.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: December 2019
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
