CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Health Promotion and Communication team, in the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch, Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Health Promotion and Communication team works on a range of topics, including recreational water, drinking (i.e., tap) water, case and outbreak surveillance, harmful algal blooms, hand hygiene, global WASH, emergency preparedness/response, therefore, cross-training opportunities are anticipated.
Research Project: This project offers an opportunity to participate as a core member of a multi-disciplinary team focusing on waterborne disease response and prevention activities. Throughout the course of this research project, the participant may have the opportunity to be involved in activities such as:
- Supporting the team’s communication activities by researching, gathering, compiling, and developing information
- Aiding in the development of key messages, communication/roll-out plans, talking points, and CDC-Info responses, as well as communication materials such as web pages, newsletter content, infographics, fact sheets, social media messages, program briefings, program summaries, and power point presentations
- Participating in the identification of gaps in existing materials and channels that reach target audiences
- Contributing to the development of communications and materials to support campaign efforts
- Collaborating with internal and external groups on health communication and marketing of program priorities
Learning Objectives: There will be opportunities to learn from experienced communicators how to quickly translate science into public-facing web pages that accurately communicates risk. There will also be opportunities to learn how to develop a wide range of communication materials. In addition, there will be opportunities to attend branch and division meetings, educational seminars, and other activities as schedules allow. The participant will have opportunities to enhance critical thinking and problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 20, 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by September 1, 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred skills:
- Strong oral and written communication to various audiences
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Knowledge/experience in communication, branding, and developing/producing communication materials
- Experience developing PowerPoints, infographics, fact sheets, blog posts, and educational materials, using plain language
- Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
- Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 9/1/2021 11:59:00 PM.
