A research opportunity is currently available in the Mycotic Diseases Branch (MDB) at the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The Division works to promote food safety and to prevent illnesses from foodborne, waterborne, and fungal infections.
Throughout the course of this research project, the selected participant will participate in data management and data visualization projects related to fungal diseases (i.e., Valley fever, multidrug-resistant Candida auris infections, secondary fungal infections post COVID). One of MDB’s main data systems is the Data Collation and Integration for Public Health Event Response (DCIPHER) platform, the current data platform for the COVID-19 response. Under the guidance of a mentor, the research participant will learn how to conduct duties focused on enhancing the branch’s capacity to 1) integrate data from various fungal disease surveillance and laboratory systems into DCIPHER and 2) analyze and visualize data using the DCIPHER tools and dashboards for public health action. The research participant will train closely with CDC and state epidemiologists, laboratorians, data scientists, and bioinformaticians.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Exceptionally qualified candidates who have received their bachelor's degree will also be considered.
