Description

A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The division works to promote food safety and to prevent illnesses from foodborne, waterborne, and fungal infections. The selected participant will train with the Global Health Unit and scientists.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training in the following:

  • Development and implementation of a base line capacity review to assess international laboratory capacity to respond and detect enteric diseases
  • Collection and analysis of performance metrics to evaluate program activities
  • Attend and participate in briefings, meetings on global health activities, and other priorities related to DFWED global health efforts
  • Development of resources to promote the divisions global health efforts in coordination with health communication team
  • Contribute to other related functions such as literature reviews and analysis of qualitative data
  • Translation scientific research and data into consumer-focused materials, including writing fact sheets, web content and program stories. Participate in planning major communication initiatives.
  • Analysis of web usage data to develop recommendations for improving communication practices and adding needed content
  • Participate in monitoring social media channels and develop content for their use (messages, photos, video)
  • Participate in partnership activities, identifying opportunities to expand collaborations and to develop new partnerships

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. 

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields. A minor in health communication, behavioral sciences, or a related field is strongly desired. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Strong writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel including database applications
  • Experience in public health or translating science-based information for the public
  • Ability to conduct research effectively as part of a team and interact collaboratively across teams
  • Experience in communication principles, methods, practices and techniques and analytical methods to execute and measure health communication campaigns and outreach efforts
  • Experience developing and measuring key performance indicators
  • Good critical thinking and problem solving skills
