A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
DCPC's Associate Director for Science (ADS) seeks an individual with a background in public health who will participate in training and conduct research with the Office of the DCPC ADS. The participant will gain an understanding of the breadth of scientific and programmatic work in the Division, understanding the policies that guide scientific work at a Federal agency, and contributing to the communication of scientific information on cancer prevention and control.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities: (1) contribute to Division scientific projects and projects (that involve data analysis using scientific statistical programs such as SAS, SUDAAN, and SPSS, and datasets such as Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and National Health Interview Survey); (2) receive training by observing the day-to-day science administrative responsibilities for the ADS office and understanding the division’s scientific activities; (3) participate in dissemination and coordination efforts of cancer-related projects and activities and develop products to enhance and promote DCPC’s scientific and programmatic priorities; and (4) receive training by attending the DCPC ADS Seminar, which is a bi-monthly seminar series to promote collaboration by presenting scientific and programmatic works-in-progress from DCPC, CDC, and external partners.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
