A fellowship opportunity is available in the Chronic Viral Diseases Branch (CVDB), Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP), of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

CVDB’s mission is to control and prevent diseases associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) and medically unexplained fatiguing illnesses (e.g., Myalgic Encephalomyalitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome [ME/CFS]) in collaboration with community, state, national and international partners.

Joining the Epidemiology, Data Management, and Analysis (EDMA) team at CVDB, the selected participant will assist with epidemiological, statistical and/or data application support for the ME/CFS Public Health Research Program. Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities may include:

• Providing assistance on the design, development and use of epidemiological and statistical approaches for epidemiological research and surveillance activities
• Assisting in analyses and evaluations of methodologies used in research and surveillance activities to ensure the validity and reliability of the data collected
• Participating in CDC research activities and special investigations related to HPV and ME/CFS
• Performing statistical analyses of ME/CFS research and surveillance data using computing packages, such as SAS, STATA, R, Python, etc.
• Assisting with responding to data requests and data management as needed
• Working with the team lead on data applications, data visualization and manipulation for computational modeling
• Writing reports and making presentations related to the epidemiologic design or analysis of ME/CFS research and surveillance activities

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

• A Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or other data-related fields received within the last five years.
• Experience in database design, surveillance systems, or conducting data analysis on surveys is required.
• Knowledge of population-based surveys and statistics is desired.
