CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD), in CDC’s Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS), is driven to improve health outcomes through a competent sustainable, and empowered public health workforce. DSEPD manages a number of fellowships and training programs designed to provide mostly new graduates in various disciplines the opportunity to learn in public health programs both at CDC and in health agencies across the country and abroad. Fellows receive competency-based training, hands-on experience, and high-quality mentoring. DSEPD also provides expertise in developing and delivering training across CDC and hosts various platforms for continuing education and professional development, which are accessible to public health professionals worldwide. DSEPD’s Science Office supports a range of cross cutting scientific activities, including evaluation, workforce analytics, information technology, and scientific administration. 

Research Project: DSEPD’s Science Office seeks a participant to train under the Deputy Director for Science and the Associate Director for Science to plan, implement, and evaluate a range of activities under the Division’s quality science portfolio. These activities may include training in:

• Developing and identifying tools, trainings, and other educational materials to support uptake and application of the Division’s Quality Science Standards within the Division and through the Division’s training fellowships
• Developing and identifying tools, trainings, and other educational materials to support continued growth of Division staff, supervisors, and fellows in the area of scientific writing and communicating findings effectively in writing and data visualization
• Identifying ways to train fellows and staff in better integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion perspectives and questions into their scientific work and writing
• Tracking, digesting, and sharing peer-reviewed and grey literature related to the public health workforce, professional development, and training
• Facilitating the development of, and supporting the implementation of, a Division-level strategic agenda for research, analysis, and evaluation related to the public health workforce more broadly and the Division’s fellowships more specifically
• Creating and supporting opportunities for Division staff to meaningfully reflect on data and findings that stem from evaluation studies, the peer-reviewed and grey literature, and other analyses relevant to their work, to support ongoing quality improvement and integration of evidence into the Division’s practice
• Evaluating some of the newer components of the activities above, for program improvement purposes
• Conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses of administrative data from a database tracking the scientific integrity review process

Learning Objectives: increased knowledge and skills related to promoting quality science, working with scientific literature, managing information, collaborating and communicating across scientific disciplines, and supporting the planning and implementation of scientific programs

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
