CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The participant will conduct activities within the Countermeasure Tracking System (CTS) program aimed at developing, maintaining and supporting the use of information technology to distribute, manage and dispense medical countermeasures. Federal, state and local health departments, as well as other public and private entities require the distribution of medical countermeasures which may include medical supplies such as respirators, pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics and iodine pills, vaccines such as those for used for preventing COVID-19, influenza and other diseases, among others. Within the CTS program, CDC maintains several information systems including the Medical Countermeasure Electronic Request and Information System (MERIS), POD Assist (Cloud) and POD Assist (On Prem).  

Learning Objectives: The participant will learn how to conduct analyses of public policies influencing the use and adoption of information systems that support preparedness and response. After analysis, the participant will learn how to summarize and present relevant findings to internal and external audiences. 

The participant will collaborate with existing staff to learn how to identify utilization trends of information systems that support preparedness and response, define and expand related features and functionality of such systems, generate socialization strategy aimed at expanding adoption of information systems both internally and externally, participate in meetings and present information to technical and non-technical audiences. The participant will learn how to design and implement data collection processes including using questionnaires and surveys, how to analyze data quantitatively and qualitatively, summarize and present results both in the form of verbal and written reports as well as in the form of presentations internally at CDC, at public health meetings and for submission to scientific journals.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
