A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, GA.

This project is in the Division of Laboratory Systems evaluation office supporting evaluations across the three branches and office of the director. This research opportunity will allow the participant to build evaluation capacity through experiential efforts focusing particularly on learning various quantitative and qualitative approaches and executing evaluation management. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in evaluating activities using CDC's six step evaluation framework.  Activities may include, but are not limited to:

• Engaging stakeholders
• Contributing to the development of a program description (usually a logic model)
• Identifying the evaluation focus, key evaluation questions, and relevant process and outcome indicators
• Participating in developing a data collection and analysis plan, collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data
• Interpreting the data in the context of the program and justifying conclusions
• Using data and sharing lessons learned
• Under the mentorship of the agency staff, contribute to the facilitation of stakeholder and other meetings for purposes of designing and implementing the evaluation, interpreting results and determining appropriate action steps, and/or providing technical assistance or training to internal and external audiences on evaluation methods, concepts, and tools

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

• Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of public health evaluation and monitoring
• Knowledge of related social and health sciences
• Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing
